SCOPE OF WORK
Trio A (1966) will be transmitted by Sara Wookey, a Los Angeles-based dancer and choreographer and official certified Trio A transmitter since 2010. The deliverables include: 3,5 hours of rehearsal in an 5 day
workshop. Each day consists of an hour warm up, led by Sara, to prepare the students physically and mentally for the dance, transmitting the four strata or layers of information of the dance, including the physical
movements, spacing, gaze and pacing.
Although the focus is on the physical transmission of the dance there are three other essential components of the work that will be addressed in the timeframe and that are essential in a successful transmission
process.
Those four additional elements are:
1. Three to four theoretical and historical readings on Trio A.
2. In-studio discussions about Trio A readings that contextualize their physical learning experience of the dance.
3. In-studio assignments that include verbal and written descriptions of the dance, notation forms such as mapping, graphing and illustrating the dance.
This is an exploration of the innate organizational principals of the dance and to better understand how they learn a dance, their individual movement preferences and ways of remembering complex movement combinations.
Please note that the minimum hours to transmit the entire dance effectively is 30 hours; 50-60 hours if it will be performed by students/ participants. Any performance by the students/participants whom are
non-dance professionals, must be approved by Yvonne Rainer via Sara Wookey. Royalties will be negotiated with Yvonne Rainer directly should there be generated income from performances.
Sara Wookey is an American dance artist currently based in London on an international artist Visa endorsed from Arts Council England. Wookey holds a B.F.A. in Dance from The Ohio State University and an M.F.A. in Dance from UCLA. Her practice explores social and spatial approaches to dance and choreography.
Wookey established herself as a young choreographer in the Netherlands where she was based between 1996-2006. There she was supported through grants from the Netherlands Funds for the Performing Arts and Amsterdam Funds for the Arts, among others. Danswerkplaats Amsterdam (now Dansmakers), a dance house, administered her projects. She created over a dozen evening-length dance works that toured in Europe and North America.
Wookey has been engaged with museums since the late 1990s presenting her work, engaging in learning programs and lecturing. Notable commissions include: «Performing Navigations: (Re)Mapping the Museum» (2010) at the Hammer Museum and «Punt.Point» (2014) at vanAbbe Museum the Netherlads.
Wookey has worked closely with choreographer Yvonne Rainer since the 2010. She is one of five dance artists certified by Rainer to teach and perform her iconic work Trio A (1966). Rainer’s other works: Chair Pillow 1969, Diagonal (part of Terrain) 1963; and Talking Solo (part of Terrain) 1963 are also taught and performed by Wookey. Much of Wookey’s own practice is closely connected to her work in the Netherlands in the 1990s, American Post-Modern dance and European contexts for dance. Her practice is closely connected to ideas of transmission, value and language.
