Maya Matilda Carroll/ The Instrument: 2 days workshop and performance at Kinitiras

Αρχείο-Archive
3 days with Maya

Maya Matilda Carroll has been at Kinitiras studio 2 times already as a resident artist in 2009 and 2010. Under her second residency she worked with Antigone Gyra and presented the solo «Gone» in City Cabaret-British Council in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Maya returns in an effort to promote the unic, global artistic community, as opposed to the political warfare of our time, and she is offering selflessly, to enhance Kinitiras studio, a 2 days workshop on 15 and 16 of September where participants will experience the body as a medium / tool. In addition, on September 17, she will present Ten Horizons, a piece for imagined bodies and audible traces based on the ideas of the workshop «The instrument», which has been jointly established by Roy Carroll.

The Instrument teaching is a laboratory for movers and dancers who wish to fine-tune their physical-performance qualities. It offers a wide and rich exploration through the senses, the articulation of movement in time and space and the imagination. The act of ‘the body as an instrument’ suggests a deep attitude of perception/ experimentation. While observing the body with its capacities of softness and strength, we will allow its plural systems to guide us, to live, behave and create in synchronization with our vision, perspective and intelligence. Improvising with form, rhythm, touch and resonance grows individual and self-reflective awareness while working alone or with partners. The broadening of physical vocabulary is encouraged along clarity of presence, while every momentary task is offered through pleasure, humanness and attentiveness. The class will focus on composition in real time and direct participants to listening and engaging with their performance state at a high level.

Maya Matilda Carroll is a Berlin based choreographer, dancer and teacher. Her independent work began in 2004 in Israel and continues in Berlin and Europe since 2005. As a dancer she has worked with BatSheva Company, Lara Barsacq, Arkadi Zeides, Sasha Waltz and Guests and Julyen Hamilton to name a few. Working in Germany and Europe she has been making dances and performing her work in state theaters, independent venues and alternative spaces. Maya’s work evolves from the tension and interplay between reality and fantasy while reflecting on radical human conditions and relationships. Sound, images, poetry and music speak through the body and articulate narratives and emotional realms. Her physical work detects details, hunts for beauty and survival. In 2011 Maya formed The Instrument – an artistic structure standing for her independent and collaborative work with composer Roy Carroll. Side by side to creating dance pieces, producing works and touring, Maya leads open classes and workshops in Berlin and abroad on a regular basis. Her compositional and choreographic language is continuously researched and shared in her class.

Roy Carroll is a composer/ musician born in Dublin, living in Berlin, making performances, recordings and compositions. His current / recent work explores the physicality of music through provoking kinetic interactions between materials such as denuded loudspeakers, resonant objects, textured materials, feedback loops, the moving body, acoustic spaces, – instability as a creative prerogative even. His compositional work is similarly focused, but with some consideration for repeatability. Roy has collaborated extensively with Maya Matilda Carroll / The Instrument since 2006.
Their first creation as The Instrument was Magic Valley (2011) in collaboration with Sandra Lolax (dancer) and costume and stage designer Sarah Marguier. The Instrument’s work has performed and toured in Europe (Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Czech-republic, Greece, Holland, Ireland), Brazil, Canada and Israel. Their work Magic Valley will perform in October 2014 in Tel-Aviv and Acco (supported by Goethe Institute) and in Izmir, Turkey in April 2015. Their work While House (2014) will show in Curtain-Up festival in Tel-Aviv, November 2014.
