Sergio Mendes will be at Kinitiras Studio from 3 to 10 of May 2014 as an invited resident artist and will work with Lia Chamilothori on the project “Travellers” which will lead to an open presentation on 10th of May 2014.
Traveling is always a unique experience. There is never one journey equal to other. It always depends if you go alone, accompanied, if you pick up someone on the way or even if someone picks you up. The point is that each travel is different.
This research and performance are inspired by long distant travels. Nowadays migration is presented as the key to survival in this economical situation that we are facing. Very easily you can find yourself alone wandering through Europe without a destination, with the only object to find a job.
Your academic qualifications are worthless long ago, so now you take any job you can. After years of mind work, we forgot to learn ancient basic tasks that make our bodies mobile.
Now, it’s required to adapt either in field work, construction or others similar very important jobs that were easily discarded in our heads. Education is important, but survival tops it all.
Sometimes “the grass is NOT always greener in the other side”.
The hope of finding something better outside of your home country becomes a reality and a necessity. It’s time to go. People in every country that we pass trough say the same thing. “It’s the crisis” it gives the feeling of not being welcome nowhere. Your backpack becomes an extension of yourself, your fix point in reality, your safety net, protection, pillow and even friend.
“All that is gold does not glitter. Not all those who wander are lost.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
