Since 2009 Alessandra Fabbri is studying wild plants and weeds, and the way we relate to them.
She has been observing plants growing spontaneously in her garden or on the edges of roads and then she started to photograph plants and work on body movement in relationship to visual (shapes, dynamics) or other sensory inputs (perfume, tactile stimulation, sound).
When she visited Athens and Acropolis for the first time, she appreciated the way wild plants are perfectly in harmony with the ruins: the ancient marbles and the local flora are complementary to each other. Dimitris Pikionis, the architect responsible for the restoration and lanscaping, emphasized the importance of planting small plants and bushes from Attica in the surroundings.
During this residency, Alessandra would like to collect video and photographic material for her long term project "Catalogo delle piante infestanti" (her personal Catalogue of weeds that will become a full evening show) and to investigate the theme "dancing as a form of landscaping". Then she will present her research project at a free open presentation that will take place at Kinitiras studio on April 27th.
What can dancing and landscaping have in common? In which ways can a dance piece be connected with the environment and get inspired by it? In which ways can I look at the landscape, or have an effect on it? How can vision and the perception of a place change the vision and the feeling of my own body? How is my viewpoint travelling through space? What is the relationship between spontaneity and artificiality, nature and culture, casualness and determination?
As Dimitris Pikionis wrote: "All things are interconnected; for they are all affected and changed by each other. We can apprehend one thing only through the intermediary of everything else."
