The Australian artist Deborah Leiser-Moore will be at Kinitiras Studio from 25th to 29th of April as an invited resident artist and will work with Kinitiras member Afroditi Vervenioti in order to evolve her latest work, KaBooM!.
KaBooM!, that Deborah has been currently working on, is a raw, immersive, highly physical and visual site-specific performance piece that investigates cultural memory and war. It focuses on the experiences of those from war torn environments as well as those who have served overseas and who have returned bearing the memories of those experiences. It is particularly interested in what the body remembers, and what triggers those memories, as well as how a general audience can respond and empathize with their fellow citizens via the languages of performance.
In relevance to this research, Deborah is going to present a free 3 hour workshop (16.30-19.30) on Sunday, 28th of April at Kinitiras Studio. Its theme will be "Devising from the Body".
Starting with exercises to create an awareness of the body in space and the nature of the body as language, it will then be introduced a theme to work with. The group will be split into smaller groups to investigate an "iconic moment in life". The body will create a Text based on the chosen theme and then it will be joined in the space with other languages, sound, music, voice and text in order to make performance. Putting it all together, the devised pieces will be shown.
The seminar is open to professionals or people with lots of experience in physical theatre. The working language of the workshop will be English and participants might be good if they could come in prepared with a very short personal story (one paragraph – and/or images) of an important moment in their own life. It will be interesting to see how to distill the essence of this moment.
