Penelope Morout is the first resident artist at Kinitiras for the 2013-14 season. She will be at our studio from 1/2/2014 till 11/2/2014 in order to work and develop her solo, PORCELAINE and she will offer a free workshop on 8/2/2014.
At the moment, Penelope is working on the ambiguous, often even paradox meaning of the term “adulthood”.
When a girl menstruates for the first time at the age of 10…When, consequently, a child can, from then on, have her own child, is she considered all grown up and mature? Most countries set majority at 18. It is the threshold of adulthood as it is recognized by law. We can, then, magically be responsible for our decisions and actions; we can drive, vote, and have a critical mind on politics. How much does this statutory principle correspond to the actual mental or physical maturity of an individual?
And how fragile can the soul of a child be when the paternal figure collapses before her, when she realizes how blind trust can be misplaced, when she is forced by circumstances to assume the responsibilities of an adult in order to survive?
“PORCELAINE is a solo about the often violent passage to adulthood. It does not only constitute a movement research, but also a way of reconciliating with my past and my present, as well as- if possibly- a soul purification for my future”.
As part of the residency, Penelope will offer a free workshop, open to all.
How can each of us develop our personal movement language? Is there a “right” and a “wrong” way? How can we integrate the meaning of the term “irrational” in our movement and how can the basic principles of "Théâtre de l’Absurde" inspire us?
During this three-hour seminar, she will try to share with us the choreographic tools she is using to create the movement language of PORCELAINE. We will follow instructions which, through improvisation and creative interplay, will help us have a better perception of our body, to give value to all our joints and to eventually create specific movement phrases.
Greek-french artist Penelope Morout has graduated from the Greek State School of Dance in Athens (S.D.SC.) and from the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.) – School of Architecture Engineering. Even though she started her dance studies at the Alvin Ailey School in N.Y.C. and the Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, she truly found herself and her artistic means of expression during her three years of professional education at the S.D.SC. She was fascinated by contemporary dance and dance-theatre, while she never ceased being intrigued by the relationship between Dance and Architecture. Already since 2003, and within the context of the preparation of her lecture in N.T.U.A., on “Choreographing: meeting points between architecture and dance”, she collaborated with New-Zealander choreographer Carol Brown and Greek architect Manolis Iliakis, during their seminar of Choreography/ Composition on “Architecture & Dance”, in order have access to their archive material.
She has participated in seminars in Deltebre Workshop Dansa Festival in Spain, in Impulstanz Festival in Austria, in Brocante International Circus Festival in Italy, as well as in Contemporary Dance Festivals of Athens and Kalamata, in Greece. During her studies at the State School she collaborated with Anton Lachký (Les Slovaks) for the creation “Old man’s dream”, with Christine Gouzelis and Paul Blackman for the creation “Folly”, participated in the creations of Nikos Kalogerakis and danced Graham repertory, taught by Peny Diamantopoulou and Olia Tournaritou.
In September 2013, she went to Brussels initially for the WEAVE Arts Residency, where she eventually stayed for three months, elaborating on her solo, “Porcelaine”. Substantial influence in her evolution as a dancer and artist have been- and still are- her mentors Linda Kapetanea and Jozef Frucek (ROOTLESSROOT), with whom she continues to work closely and practice on their technique Fighting Monkey. She was fortunate to be able to participate in the two weeks seminars they delivered at DOCH University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm, Sweden, and will have the honor to have them as choreography supervisors during her first choreographic work.
