Educational workshop on movement and improvisation for professional and amateur dancers
Coordinated by Antigone Gyra
The workshop “Listening bodies” focuses on cultivating listening as a physical, sensory, and kinetic practice. It begins each time with a cycle of active physical listening and a frenzied, exhilarating Sunday dance.
Through the tools of contemporary dance and improvisation, it explores the relationship of the body to time, music, and silence, as well as the ways in which listening activates movement and composition. Through structured and open exercises, Rudolf Laban’s approaches to the use of time and music in the creation of movement are studied. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between the body and time, rhythm, and the dynamics of movement, both in conditions of musical accompaniment and silence, activating listening as a fundamental physical and kinetic practice. During the workshop, silence is approached as an active and creative soundscape, in which movement emerges as a form of presence and identity.
At the end of each meeting, the circle is formed again- a space for sharing, tea (literally), and sympathy, where the experience settles and is collectively transformed.
Methodology:
The research evolves from individual experience (solo) to duets and collective composition (group), through structured and open improvisations. Music and silence function as equal fields of composition and movement. At the same time, freedom of expression is cultivated through musical listening brought by the group that will be created, exploring the experiential and personal relationship of the body with sound.
