Transition I Enter Communities of Body → International Community Dance Residency is a collaboration of Kinitiras Artistic Network for Performing Arts, (www.kinitiras.com), the Goethe-Institut Athen (www.goethe.de/ins/gr), the French Institute of Greece(www.ifg.gr) the Flux Laboratory Athens (www.fluxlaboratory.com), realized with the support of the Franco-German Cultural Fund.
Part of the residency is realized with the kind support of J.F.Costopoulos Foundation and the French Institute of Bukavu (DR Congo).
The invitation
You are cordially invited to participate or simply embark on a physical and digital journey exploring the notions of Community, Transition and Euro-African Exchange through Dance. Blaise, Emilie, Marilena and Patricia will be working in the flesh, from a distance, in their current places of residency, namely Athens, Berlin, Bukavu, London, Paris as well as online. The obvious choice at the beginning of the pandemic outbreak was to cancel the Residency just a few weeks before the Artists would actually meet and work together in Athens late March. And just natural to return to the body and the communities for more hope, vision, faith and empowerment. We did the same thing after the latest version of the measures that apply throughout Europe. We are the communities of the body, all of us, we won´t give up and we´ll keep on dancing. Will you come dance with us?
Always abiding local and international health and safety regulations, our Artists are sharing their creative processes, receiving your input and feedback, including you in their creations.
On Monday 30 November the whole day is dedicated to four workshops (Community Dance Workshops) by the artists, open to English and French speaking participants from around the world. On Friday, December 18, we will watch four works in progress and we will have the opportunity to talk to the artists themselves (Works In Progress + Meet The Artists). And by the New Year we will have a short film with excerpts from the research process, the workshops and the projects.
Welcome aboard!
The communities
“In times like these, communities are clearly the source of hope, vision, faith and empowerment. People all around the world are facing tremendous social, ecological, political and financial challenges highly intensified by the pandemic. Kinitiras will do nothing less but turn to the people and their communities and ask them for ways to express, embrace and make the most of this Transition, employing the body as global common denominator. An ideal collaborative task for Dance Artists from Africa and Europe” says Antione Gyra, founder and Artistic Director of Kinitiras Artistic Network for Performing Arts, a prominent Residency host in Athens.
The people
Blaise Mangitukulu from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Emilie Vaudou from France, Marilena Sitaropoulou from Greece and Patricia Woltmann from Germany are the Dance Artists that will collaborate while working in the flesh, from a distance and online, towards the creation of Workshops and Community Dance works. They were selected following an international call by a committee consisting of Antigone Gyra, artistic director of Kinitiras, Steriani Tsintziloni, PhD dance scholar-curator, Christos Polymenakos, creator-researcher-educator, Muriel Piquet Viaux, cultural attaché of the French Embassy in Greece, Stefanie Peter, Head of Cultural Programs Southeast Europe, Goethe-Institut Athen, Iris Asimakopoulou, cultural department of Goethe-Institut Athen and Dimitra Michou, cultural department of Institut français de Grèce.
Experts will offer our Artists during the Residency reference points on Community Dance (Antigone Gyra), Psychology amid the pandemic and the intensified use of digital media (Alexandra Vassileiou & Vera Lardi), Dance and Digital Media (Katerina El Raheb), Perspectives of Collective Handling of Royalties in the Greek Dance Community (Angeliki Kanelopoulou & Ioanna Christoforou Livani), Constructive Feeedback and Verbal Communication of Choreographic Research (Christos Polymenakos).
The Residency
After six months of intense exchange of challenges, dead ends and sources of inspiration, by principle open to endless updating and with a steady focus, a daring new version of the original Residency is put in action. “There is this inescapable gut feeling, which would -paraphrasing Pina Bausch’s famous quote- say something like Dance! Dance, for we are being born again!” says Christos Polymenakos, long term Kinitiras’ collaborator, appointed as the Residency’s new designer and Artistic Director in May. “We are not after originality or the demonstration of power against all odds. There is a tenderness in the body and the communities, a distinct quality that promotes inspiration, secures results and is effective as necessary in times like this. Cooperating and sharing resources is the sustainable way to move on.”
Thank you for joining us!

L’invitation
Merci de nous avoir rejoints !
